Surgery ...

January 28, 2010

Af
ter weeks of problems with ear infections, etc., we finally were referred to an ENT to see about getting tubes for Abigail. Her appointment was this past Tuesday afternoon.

Abigail first had a hearing test. The audiologist said that her hearing was normal for her age group, but she found that she had fluid behind her right ear drum.

Next we went back to the ENT and the Nurse Practitioner said that the fluid was yellowed, which meant it had been in there for a while. Which would also explain why Abigail is always digging in that ear like it bothers her.

When the doctor saw her, he said that first he recommended tubes - usually they recommend it after having 3 in 6 months - Abigail has had 5 in 6 months, with 3 in the last 6 weeks. Next he said that he thought her adenoids were too big. So, while he is doing the tube surgery, he is going to check her adenoids and possibly take those out. Finally, after looking up her nose, he said that he thought she had silent reflux. (Dustin and I have wondered about this for a while now.) So, he is going to take a biopsy of her esophagus too and see if she has reflux.

The surgery is currently scheduled for February 10th, but since that is 2 weeks away and she is not sleeping much at night, Dustin called the ENT today to see what options we had for an earlier surgery time. The nurse said that she would put us on the cancellation list and would also email the other surgeons to see if anyone else had an opening earlier. At this point, we don't care who does the surgery, just as long as it gets done and soon. It's really wearing us all down with little to no sleep ....

I will update everyone as soon as we know more or after the surgery ...
